Expert Software Engineer (3D, C++)

About the role

Align Technology is hiring a 3D C++ Expert Software Engineer in Yerevan (EMEA-Armenia) to set the technical direction for the 3D core of its clinical software (ClinCheck, Treat, SmileCraft). The role uses AI coding agents as part of daily work, works autonomously across departments and takes end-to-end ownership of problems. It sits within the Product Innovation team and supports the goal of delivering clear aligners.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, troubleshoot and improve software for clinical research and clinical applications.
• Own the architecture and delivery of C++ components for 3D visualization (OpenGL 4 / shaders), mesh and geometry processing, and the 3D scene used by clinical applications.
• Drive technical design: write design documents, evaluate trade-offs and lead technical risk assessment in line with medical device software processes.
• Profile and optimize performance and memory usage of rendering and geometry pipelines on large meshes and complex scenes.
• Design protobuf-based APIs and cross-language integrations (C++ engines used from Python and C# services, including AWS Lambda / Docker pipelines).
• Apply AI-assisted development (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) and agentic workflows, and define good practices for the team.
• Maintain and improve the quality of the software, including the large legacy code base, and prototype solutions for Biomechanical Engineers, upgrading prototypes to production quality.
• Write and maintain unit tests (gtest / gmock) and automated UI / integration tests, including tests on the internal Python-based April test framework (training provided).
• Build, maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines in GitHub (GitHub Actions workflows for build, test, static analysis and release).
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, translate manufacturing testing results to software requirements, and interact with customers and SQA.
• Lead root cause analysis of defects, code reviews, mentor engineers, onboard new members and give regular tech talks.
• Follow quality and regulatory guidelines for medical device software, contribute ideas and follow up with patent applications.
• Work in Scrum Agile and use MS Visual Studio, Git, GitHub, JIRA, Confluence and Atlassian tools.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or another STEM major, or equivalent experience.
• 12+ years of professional experience developing software in modern C++ (C++17 or later), with expert knowledge of templates, move semantics, RAII, concurrency, memory model and STL internals.
• 4+ years in 3D software development (meshes, remeshing, spatial data structures, rendering pipelines with OpenGL 4 / GLSL shaders).
• Track record of delivering complex C++ systems, with strong software architecture and object-oriented design skills.
• Knowledge of algorithms, 3D geometry algorithms, linear algebra, computational mathematics and analytical geometry.
• Ability to work autonomously, communicate across departments and mentor engineers.
• Upper intermediate or higher English; internal communication is in English.

Required skills

• C++ (C++17 or later), performance analysis and optimization, profiling and memory analysis.
• Unit testing (gtest / gmock) and test automation; Python-based UI or integration tests are a plus.
• GitHub, Git, GitHub Actions CI/CD, and tools such as JIRA, Confluence, Bamboo.
• CMake / Visual Studio and package managers (e.g. Conan) on Windows.
• Nice to have: Python and C#, Docker, Linux, AWS Lambda, SQL, UI test automation (pytest, SikuliX, pywinauto), CAD/CAM/dental software, SaMD and IEC 62304.
