Algo Development Engineering Manager

About the role

An Algo Development Engineering Manager is sought to lead a small team of Python and Java engineers. The team develops and maintains Django services, as well as Flink and Kafka streaming pipelines. The manager drives technical direction, manages and mentors the team, reviews code and helps turn algorithm prototypes into reliable, production-ready services.

Key responsibilities

• Hire, mentor and grow the team, including recruiting senior engineers, running performance conversations and shaping how the team works as it grows.
• Set technical direction for the Django and Django REST Framework service, the Java optimization and services work, and the Flink and Kafka streaming pipelines.
• Decide when a research approach is ready for production and when it needs rethinking first, then get it there.
• Own the health of the Django service on PostgreSQL: data model, API surface, performance and reliability.
• Review pull requests and set the bar for what ships.
• Run design reviews, planning and postmortems, and ensure cross-team work has an owner before it starts.

Required profile

• Degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Real engineering management experience, having owned hiring, performance and delivery for a team.
• Depth in Python or Java, with working fluency in the other; able to read a pull request, ask the right questions and jump into the code.
• Experience taking prototype or notebook work into a production system that you then ran.
• Good technical judgment and the ability to explain your reasoning so the team can act on it.

Required skills

• Hands-on PostgreSQL scaling: query tuning, indexing and schema design; able to read a query plan and fix slow queries.
• Django and Django REST Framework.
• Flink and Kafka streaming pipelines.
