Senior Java Software Engineer - Customs Platform

About the role

Webb Fontaine, a global trade technology company founded in 2002 and headquartered in Dubai, is looking for a Senior Java Software Engineer to help design and evolve a modern platform supporting mission-critical Customs operations. You will work on complex distributed systems, solve challenging engineering problems and influence technical decisions that affect real-world trade operations.

Key responsibilities

• Design and build scalable, reliable, high-performance backend services using Java, Spring Boot and modern distributed architectures.
• Drive technical excellence through architectural discussions, design reviews, code reviews and continuous improvement of engineering practices.
• Own solutions end-to-end, from technical design and implementation to testing, deployment and production optimization.
• Solve complex challenges in distributed messaging, data consistency, concurrency, performance and system reliability.
• Use AI coding assistants and agents to speed up development, testing, debugging and refactoring while keeping code correct, secure and maintainable.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate with cross-functional teams in an international engineering environment.
• Travel to project offices when necessary.

Required profile

• 5+ years of professional software development experience with strong hands-on Java (17+) and Spring Boot expertise.
• Fluency in English; availability and willingness to travel abroad when required is mandatory.
• Nice to have: experience with Redis, Elasticsearch, Kubernetes, Helm, GitOps, AWS/GCP/Azure, production AI-powered systems, and Customs, trade or government systems.

Required skills

• Java 17+ (21 preferred), Spring Boot, microservices, REST APIs, event-driven architectures and distributed systems.
• SQL and relational databases such as PostgreSQL or Oracle, including schema design and query optimization.
• Java concurrency, JVM internals, performance optimization, secure coding and automated testing.
• CI/CD, Gradle or Maven, containerization and application observability.
• Practical experience with AI coding assistants (e.g. Claude Code, Codex) and critical evaluation of AI-generated solutions.
